Mini Underwater Hockey Information
How do you play Underwater Hockey?
|
Underwater Hockey is played at the bottom of a deep pool with 6 players in each of two teams in the water and up to 6 subs sitting on the side.
For our Mini Underwater Hockey League nights in Wellington we use Huia Pool as this facility has a movable floor which we can set to 1.5m. When the gong goes each team heads towards the puck located at the bottom middle of the pull and tries to get it into their goal bin located at each end. They will need to pass the puck and move it around the players to achieve this goal. Plus coming up for air. Watch this explanation video filmed at the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre. |
League Night Organisation
The League Nights will be organised and run by the Wellington Mini Underwater Hockey coordinator, helped by senior secondary school students who have gained experience playing Underwater Hockey and are members of the Central Zone U18 Representative Squads.
The Wellington Association will use the Mini UWH nights to give experience to these people in Coaching and Refereeing and will be supported by the Mini League coordinators. The coaches will have a half hour before games commence to get to know the players, help them with formations and go over the basic rules of the game, .
We will run two games simultaneously with each team on either side of the pool moving left to right of the entrance way. The pool will be split by barriers on the bottom of the pool. The games will be 7 minutes halves with 1minute for half time and 3 minutes between games. This may change depending on the number of teams in each league.
Warmup areas will be provided in the deep area of the pool. A timer on the large screen TV will keep the running of the league on schedule and make sure we finish on time. Medals will be given to first, second and third place teams as well as an 'MVP' award for each team.
Referee's for the matches will be undertaken by the coaches or arranged by WUHA for the duration of the night.

CoachesEach team will be allocated with a Mini UWH coach and generally an assistant coach. Coaches will be in the water with the players to guide them in their play and they will look after each team for the duration of the competition.
Generally, all Mini UWH coaches will be Central Zone representatives (Wellington) at the UWHNZ Interzone (Elite or U18) Championships. Sometimes the coaches maybe even be NZ representatives. TeamsIdeally, each team should have a minimum of 10 players and a maximum of 12 players. There will be 6 in the water and the remaining players (subs) sit on the side (subbing area) indicated by the coach.
